C walked to the guy in the canteen and waited for his turn.
“What would you like today sir?”
C extended his hand. The canteen guy was slightly taken aback and also embarrassed. He hesitated, thought for a moment and then stuck out his hand. C shook his hand warmly and gave him a huge smile.
“It’s my last day at work and I came here to thank you. You’ve been such an important part of this journey. I just wanted to take a moment to say thanks for everything you ever did!”
The canteen guy was still embarrassed, but grinned. Everyone frequents the canteen at least twice a day and he serves them relentlessly, not expecting a thing in return. He smiles when someone walks over to the counter and greets them warmly. He does the best he can to serve as quick as possible so as to not waste anyone’s time. He knows the orders of the regulars and tries to remember the new ones. Yet, seldom has anyone noticed him and given him so much respect! C had showed him his gratitude. The canteen guy’s wide grin is going to be a part of me for the rest of my life. And C’s simple yet profound gesture as well!
C will be missed! And so will his random acts of kindness be. His unadulterated smile, never-say-die attitude, vibrant energy and all-curing hugs will be missed too!
Good bye C! Spread more joy as you walk away…
