This is one of my most favourite songs from an old movie. It is written in a form or Urdu poetry called Nazm. Nazm is a free style of writing poetry, one with no limitations on the size or the metric. It has a central theme and each verse serves to add to the central theme. Often a Nazm is also named according to the theme and the name conveys what the poet is trying to convey through the entire poem.
So this song…this Nazm was written by a Pakistani poet called Fayyaz Hashmi. I have been listening to this a lot lately and I thought I’d put it up here…for those that enjoy Indian music and poetry and those curious to read a different form of poetry, here are a few verses that are closest to my heart!
Aaj jane ki zid na karo….Yun hi peheloo mein baithe raho…
Aaj jane ki zid na karo.
Haaye mar jayenge, hum toh lut jayenge…Aisi baatein kiya na karo…
Aaj jane ki zid na karo.
Don’t insist on leaving tonight…sit close to me, just as you are now.
Don’t talk about parting ways, nor of what you would lose, if you left me tonight.
Don’t insist on leaving…
Tum hi socho zara, kyun na rokein tumhe? Jaan jati jab uthke jate ho tum…
Tumko apni qasam jaan-e-jaan…baat itni meri maan lo…
Aaj jane ki zid na karo…
And why shouldn’t I stop you tonight? When you leave, you take a part of my life with you…
Please, just listen to me this once…
Don’t insist on leaving tonight…
Waqt ki qaid mein zindagi hai magar,
Chand ghadiyan yahi hain jo azaad hain…
Inko khokar meri jaan-e-jaan…
Umr bhar na taraste raho…
Aaj jane ki zid na karo!
This life is a prisoner of time…
But these few moments of togetherness are free…
Don’t lose what you have in this moment….only to regret it all your life.
Don’t insist on leaving tonight…
